Ingredients:

  • 1.5 lbs ground beef
  • 1/2 cup plain breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 lbs Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

Instructions:

  1. Combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Mix with a light hand until just combined.
  2. Press the meat mixture evenly into the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20 minutes.
  3. While the meat is baking, boil potatoes in salted water until tender. Drain and let them steam for 2 minutes to remove excess moisture.
  4. Mash the potatoes with butter, milk, garlic powder, and salt until smooth.
  5. Whisk together the ketchup, brown sugar, and apple cider vinegar to create the glaze.
  6. Spread the glaze over the pre-baked meat layer, then swoop the mashed potatoes over the glaze to create rustic peaks.
  7. Top with shredded cheddar cheese and bake for another 20-25 minutes until the cheese is bubbling and the potato peaks are golden brown.
